American Sign Language in Canada

by Thea
(Alberta, Canada)

I live in Canada and am currently learning ASL via your website (and your course is fantastic, by the way!), but I'm not sure about the differences between ASL in Canada and the US. I did some research and have learned that among Anglophone Canadians, ASL is used, but I am concerned that the ASL I am learning may be significantly different in certain areas. Do you know?

Answer: Hello Thea, Thank you so much for using my FAQ form!

I am not very familiar with ASL use in Canada other than that they use it primarily in the English-speaking parts of Canada.

I do know that both French Sign Language (Quebec Sign Language-LSQ) and American Sign Language are used in Canada, and ASL is descended from LSQ, so they are very similar in some ways.

It's important to note that regional variation in sign language occurs everywhere--even within the United States. Signs can vary state-to-state as well as country-to-country.

The only way to learn these variations is to be involved with the Deaf community in your area. You will most likely be able to see how different people sign different words and get used to the variations that are used in your country.

For example, I recommend attending some Deaf events. Since http://www.ohsoez.com is mostly for the US, you can contact the Canadian Association of the Deaf (http://www.cad.ca/) and see if they have any information about the Deaf communities near you.

Let me know if I can be of any more help :)

God bless,

Michelle Jay
