Does Start ASL give foreign language credit for school?

by Suzanne

Michigan requires two years of a foreign language to graduate from high school. My son's school only offers Spanish. They have said that he can take sign language as his foreign language if it is graded and is equal to two years of high school foreign language. Does your program do tests, and how is it recorded (pass/fail or percents)? How would we prove this to the school? Is it equal to two years of high school foreign language? What is the cost?

It looks like you have a good amount of classes (the best list I have seen). Any advice that you would have for us would be appreciated.

Thanks
Suzanne

Answer:

Hi Suzanne,

Unfortunately, my classes are not accredited. I do not do formal tests or grading at all. These classes are more for people who just want to learn the language or supplement what they are learning in their formal class.

One website that offers what you are looking for is http://www.lifeprint.com. He offers paid online classes that are good for credit with the permission of the teacher. I think the tuition is approximately $450.

Other websites include http://www.handspeak.com and http://www.signingonline.com that offer paid online classes. I don't know if they fulfill the foreign language credit for high school, though.

If possible, I would suggest looking for ASL classes at a community college in your area. If high schools don't offer the classes, community colleges are a great way to learn and the student gets both high school and college credit at the same time.

Let me know if you have any more questions :)

God bless,

Michelle Jay
