ASL 3 - Unit 4

In this unit of the free online sign language classes, you will be learning how to sign accident narratives.

Turn to page 7 in your workbook. In the video below, Crystal, Christine, and Cristian will have a conversation. Answer the questions in your workbook.

There may come a time when you need to describe an incident where you injured yourself.

The best way to do this is:

1. Describe the situation
2. Indicate the kind of object or surface that injured you
3. Use a sign like WRONG, NOT SEE, or OVERLOOK if something unexpected happened
4. Use classifiers to show how you slipped, fell, or otherwise injured yourself
5. Tell the result or your feelings afterward

You would use this for narratives like, "I slipped on the banana and fell backward" or "I didn't see the pole and I ran right into it".

In the video below, Darcy will demonstrate various classifiers used to describe accidents and injuries.

Turn to page 8 in your workbook. In the video below, Darcy will be signing 10 sentences. Each sentence is a short accident narrative. Watch the video and fill in the missing information for each number in the table in your workbook. The first one has been done for you.

Car accidents are a common topic for conversations. To describe a car accident, you would use classifiers, facial expressions, and other informative signs.

Turn to page 9 in your workbook. In the video below, Darcy will sign 5 different car accident stories. Fill in the missing information for each number in the table in your workbook.

To practice your expression skills, I want you to use your webcam (or a video camera) and sign a short narrative. This can be your life story, a life story about someone else, or even just something that you did over the weekend. Include at least one form of role shifting and one accident narrative. Then, go back and watch your video. This is a great way to practice your expression skills and be able to critique your own signing.
