Sign Languages of the WorldASL Is NOT Universal!
There is a common myth that I must try to destroy every time someone asks... ASL is NOT universal. I cannot tell you how many times I've been asked (and sometimes even told) about this myth. Just like the thousands of different languages of the world--there are several different signed languages.
I think this fact makes things more exciting because I absolutely love American Sign Language. I love learning it, I love teaching it--it's just a beautiful language. Because of my love for ASL, I am completely fascinated with learning the signed languages from different countries. They are all so different! In ASL, we sign the alphabet with one hand. I had so much fun learning the two-handed alphabet in British Sign Language. If you are just as excited as I am (well, maybe not that excited), I am going to introduce some sign languages of the world to you: If you want to learn how to sign the two-handed alphabet, take a peek at my British Sign Language page. If you want to learn how our Spanish counterparts do it, check out my Spanish Sign Language page. If you're really curious, head across the ocean to my Japanese Sign Language page. If you want to learn how they sign down under, put your excitement in your pouch and hop over to my Auslan (Australian Sign Language) page. I also found this great website that teaches Hungarian Sign Language. If you're interested, I suggest checking them out!If you just want to learn the alphabets from different countries, visit my Sign Language Alphabet page. Start signing internationally and have fun!
