Losing my hearing?
by Donna
(South point, Ohio)
When I was little, I had tubes put into my ears. (still don't understand what the purpose for them at 31 years old). I recently went to my family doctor and they couldn't decide whether my ear drum is scarred or if I have fluid behind them (still don't understand that either).
I know that at times, my ears start ringing, then it sounds like everyone is in a barrel that talks to me, and then I don't hear at all. This lasts from 30 minutes to a full 2 hours, then I am "normal" again. I have always been klutzy, often times don't even know that I have a bruise or cut, until someone sees it, or I feel blood trickling down my leg or arm or what ever.
As you can see, I am at a state of confusion and anger. No one has ever referred me to an ear doctor, and I need a referral due to my wacky insurance. I'm ready to pull my hair out, scream, or just eat hundreds of snickers bars...lol at the last one. But it's true...can you at all help me understand the mumbo-jumbo that everyone refuses to explain to me?
Answer:Hi Donna,
I honestly don't know much about the human ear and I'm definitely not a doctor. Have you requested a referral to an ear specialist from your primary doctor? That might be your best bet.
Your doctor said that there might be fluid in your ears? I personally think that makes sense, seeing that the symptoms you are experiencing are similar to that of having water in the ear (but usually goes away much faster).
I definitely think the best thing you can do is fight to see a specialist. If your primary doctor can't give you a straight answer or explain to you, in a way you can understand, what's wrong, then s/he needs to refer you to a specialist.
I hope everything works out for you.
God bless,
