Ranking of more than 5 siblings?

by Janeel Hew
(Molokai, Hawaii)

Here in Hawaii, having a big Ohana (family) fills your home with more Aloha. How do I teach my aunt to show her place in rank? She has 12 sibling and is the fourth born child, and the first daughter. She is the Matriarch of the family because my grandparents have passed away. So her ranking status is important.

Answer:

Great question! Wow! That's a lot of siblings!

This is how I would sign it:

I HAVE 12 BROTHER SISTER FIVE-LIST(non dominant hand) "I would then have my dominant hand with the 5 handshape move downward from my non-dominant hand and wiggle my fingers. This will show that it's a long list that continues on from the last finger of my non-dominant hand (both signs with palms facing me)" BROTHER FIRST-OF-FIVE-LIST SECOND-OF-FIVE-LIST THIRD-OF-FIVE-LIST ME FOURTH-OF-FIVE-LIST (and then I would add, if you want to clarify:) FIRST DAUGHTER

The #-OF-FIVE-LIST signs mean that you point to that finger on your list (starting with your thumb that is pointing upward). You can see an example of this indexing in the conversation of ASL 1 - Unit 7.

If I wanted to continue on discussing my siblings past 5, I would use ordinal numbers with my non-dominant hand for each sibling. For example: FIFTH-ON-FIVE-LIST (NAME) SIXTH(non-dominant hand) (NAME) SEVENTH (NAME), etc.

Let me know if I can be of any more help :)

God bless,

Michelle Jay
