Receptive skills and community sign language class?
by Doris
Hi, I am so happy to have found your site. I love sign Language and I interpret sign language in my Prophetic Praise. I know a little sign language to speak with the deaf, but my learning setback is, catching on to what their saying. And my 2nd question is; I would love to start a sign language class from out of my home. How can I begin, and how many students should I begin with. Thanks.
Answer:Hello Doris,
Yes, the receptive part of sign language (reading signs) can be difficult for many people. The best thing to do is converse with deaf people on a regular basis or take a formal sign language class. Being exposed to sign language is the best way to hone your receptive skills.
Starting a sign language class from your home is a great idea! I actually touch on that a little in my upcoming e-book. You can begin by posting an ad in newspapers, on
Craigslist, or businesses and community places in your area. I would also give the information to your local library (maybe they have a newsletter) and you could possibly post a flyer in the ASL section. Local schools and churches are also good places to advertise. You can begin with as many students as you feel comfortable. I would maybe start out with 5-10 students and add more as you become more comfortable.
Let me know if you have any more questions :)
God bless,
Michelle Jay
