Receptive skills and community sign language class?

by Doris

Hi, I am so happy to have found your site. I love sign Language and I interpret sign language in my Prophetic Praise. I know a little sign language to speak with the deaf, but my learning setback is, catching on to what their saying. And my 2nd question is; I would love to start a sign language class from out of my home. How can I begin, and how many students should I begin with. Thanks.

Answer:

Hello Doris,

Yes, the receptive part of sign language (reading signs) can be difficult for many people. The best thing to do is converse with deaf people on a regular basis or take a formal sign language class. Being exposed to sign language is the best way to hone your receptive skills.

Starting a sign language class from your home is a great idea! I actually touch on that a little in my upcoming e-book. You can begin by posting an ad in newspapers, on Craigslist, or businesses and community places in your area. I would also give the information to your local library (maybe they have a newsletter) and you could possibly post a flyer in the ASL section. Local schools and churches are also good places to advertise. You can begin with as many students as you feel comfortable. I would maybe start out with 5-10 students and add more as you become more comfortable.

Let me know if you have any more questions :)

God bless,

Michelle Jay

Hi Michelle, Thanks for the site, I didn't know that I could have a copy center print them for me. I will most def do that. And also, thanks for the sites for the workbooks as well as the info about certificates to the students, appreciate all of the info..Looks like you may be my inspiration for me getting myself up and ready for starting a class in this year of 2010...Thanks so much..

Certificates and books
by: Michelle Jay - Webmaster

Hi Doris,

Regarding completion of your class....are you looking to just have something to give your students when they're done? Or are you trying to be able to give them credit for high school or college? Because I don't know how well you would be able to give people credit for school. And I don't know much about that. If you just want something to give them, you can create a "certificate" and put their name on it and sign it. There are some templates available on the Microsoft Office template website.

For printing the workbook, you can take the file to a place like Kinko's (or give them the URL: http://www.start-american-sign-language.com/support-files/startasl_asl1_workbook.pdf) and have them print it for you. It should be relatively cheap.

I'm not sure what you mean by the prices being steep. Are you talking about the workbook on my website that is used for the online classes? Because that workbook is free. You can print it here: http://www.start-american-sign-language.com/support-files/startasl_asl1_workbook.pdf

If you are talking about ASL textbooks, you can find the books that I recommend on my sign language book recommendations page.

Let me know if I can be of any more help! :)

God bless,

Michelle Jay

Michelle, I thank you for that info, it was very helpful. I thought about just teaching the Basis of American Sign Language. Basic 1 and 2. Also, how or what would you suggest on when a student finishes the class, what you would give as a completion of the course. And third, I enjoy learning and watching your models sign, and I would also love to have the downloadable workbook but I would use all of my ink printing the pages. How could I go about getting the workbook, so that I can better myself? I seen the prices and all three seem pretty steep in price. But I want this so bad. I do have a few sign language books already, but not those..Any suggestions for me.. Thanks.
