Sign Language InterpretersFAQ
Question: Do sign language interpreters need to go to college first? Answer: No, you do not need to go to college to become an ASL interpreter. Sign language interpreters only need to pass the RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) exam in order to interpret professionally. Attending college is a way to prepare for the RID exam if you are not at the required skill level and are unable to pass the exam. So, if you are already able to pass the RID exam because of your high sign language skill level and interpreting experience, you would not need to go to college. However, ASL interpreters are expected to keep up with developments in the interpreting field through continuing education. After you receive your RID certification, you are required to be involved in the Certificate Maintenance Program provided by RID. To learn more about the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, you can visit their website at http://www.rid.org. To learn more about the RID certificate requirements, you can read the RID Overview on their website as well. Related Articles:
