THIS IS AN UBELIEVABLE LESSON

by Mike
(Modesto,CA)

I started out knowing absolutely nothing about ASL or the deaf community. I simply didn't expect to lose my hearing. I have been utilizing this
class about two months. This class has helped me more than I can say. This is a very well arranged class.

I'm still shocked that this class is free. I thought that absolutely nothing is free anymore. I think you'll agree that the world is very greedy.

I'm very thankful to Micelle and all of her assistants for giving of there time and energy to provide this class.

An Awesome Course

by Becca
(South America )

Thank you so much for taking the time to create this class. I am a high school senior living in South America and have been exposed to some Paraguayan sign language. After working with deaf kids here I decided that I wanted to learn ASL for when I move back to the U.S. My teachers let me take ASL as an elective, but I have been pretty much on my own for lesson planning and material.

I don’t have very many options here so I had been using books and flash cards for awhile, but when I found you online course I was really happy. I have learned that the online class works much better for my learning style. I love the videos. I find them very helpful on learning how to follow and be involved in a conversation. I still have trouble with the numbers but have learned a lot of the vocab. I am very thankful that you put in grammar tips because I would be clueless without them.

Thank you so much for your hard work in making this course available. I hope that your classes continue to be able a blessing to other people as they have been to me.

My name is Julia and I just started learning sign language for something to do and found it soooooo interesting! This site is fantastic and is really helping me get along with it, and is much better than other sites. It's not that hard, so just give it a go and you might find that you just like it.

Thanks!!!

by Morgan

I'm 15 and I was very interested in learning sign when I was at a picnic last summer and I saw a lady (who is now my tutor) signing with a deaf woman. I was mesmerized, it was so cool that they could communicate without talking. So I started looking for things, and I found this site! It's been so great in my learning, I can't wait until I'm fluent and I can have REAL conversations with deaf people!! Thank you so much for this site!! ~Morgan

There has been so many interested and it really motivates me. I would love to spread this culture to as many people as possible. The way this website is set up makes learning so easy. I love it!

When Speaking Up in Therapy is Not Enough

by Molly
(Missouri USA)

I'm really, really grateful I found this site, especially the free courses because I'm on disability and can't afford to pay for something else. In the past, I started learning sign language with a friend who was partially deaf. But I moved and we drifted apart. Some years later, a roommate I had knew sign language as a necessity to communicate with her deaf sister. At one time, I thought I was losing my hearing and I would HAVE to learn it, but it turns out I just have really severe attention problems. I have four ASL books on my bookshelf, but because I've had the experience of signing with people who are really deaf, I know that the illustrations are often awkwardly drawn, mismatch angles, are too formal, or leave out details. Without a deaf person to practice with, just as without a native speaker in any language to practice with, you don't really learn the language in a way that facilitates real communication. My therapist is going deaf. For too long, I was silent when I needed to speak. Now that I'm speaking, I need to be heard. She's helped me so much, I'm not about to let a language barrier get in the way of my further progress. She learned the language of my heart enough to coax my Inner Child out of hiding. I want her to know I'm willing to learn ASL (and hope she will too) because she means that much to me. The video presentations in this coursework and the attention to "real-life" application of skills is as close to practicing with a "native-speaker" as I can get. You - all of you - are a blessing. ASL is a beautiful way to say "I love you, world".

Simply Awesome!

by Stephani

I really appreciate this website. My niece was born hard of hearing and will probably lose all of her hearing during her lifetime. I want to learn ASL, but do not have the money for college classes. Thank you so much for making my goals possible!

Learning from as many resources as possible!

by A.J.
(Wisconsin)

Currently, I'm taking ASL 1 community class, which is meant for the community in general. It meets once per week for 1.5 hours. I wanted to take a University course that's more intense, but I can't afford it. And other organizations offering ASL courses are not offering them at the moment. (I am in my 20s and I'm going deaf, so it's very important to me that I learn ASL as quickly as possible).

Luckily, Start ASL course is a great supplement to the community class. The combination of video, text, and the workbook is helpful, and it reinforces what I'm learning and teaches me new things. I love that I can set my own pace, and create a hybrid of class work and online work. In addition, I'm using information/classes found on other websites, and have started attending weekly events within the Deaf Community.

So thank you, Michelle, for creating this site and offering free lessons! It makes this new phase of my life less scary and that's very much appreciated!

The Best Online ASL Course!

by Lisa Groves
(Lake of the Ozarks)

Thank you Michelle for sharing your knowledge with us, I truely appreciate it. I live 75 miles from the nearest school that offers ASL courses and that is not feasible at this time. I will tell everyone who is interested in learning ASL about this site,I have already learned so much. Michelle and all the actors make it so easy I especially enjoy Marks videos even though they are learning tools I find them to be very entertaining I can watch them over and over trying to catch all the signs and I never get bored with them! Thank you again you are doing an awesome job teaching us!

I really love this stuff.

by Mieko
(New Albany)

I really really love this stuff! ASL is so awesome! This course is the best. I have been to a few other online ASL courses free and paid for.

This is by far the best one I have come across. I like how it explains every thing and the visuals are great. It makes it so easy to learn. For me the hardest part of learning ASL is the receptive part because I don't have anyone to practice with. Even without a partner this site challenges your receptive skills.

I like the fact that you can pause and rewind the lessons. I also like the on line testing/quiz portions. I tell every one I come across who is interested in learning ASL about this site. It rocks!

Valuable History

by Anonymous

This is a great lesson! I feel somewhat naive that I didn't know the history of and how deaf people were treated in the past. However, this lesson
has given me invaluable insight into the world of the deaf and is going to help me as I begin to socialize with deaf people.

Thank you for your willingness to share ASL free online. An absolute marvelous vehicle to bridging the gap between the deaf and hearing communities. It certainly was helpful and beneficial to me. I am actually learning and it's available for assisting in improving signing skills. A BIG thumbs up to you my friends!

Just want to help a customer

by Kim Pallottini
(Derry, Pa, USA)

Hi my name is Kim. I work for Dollar General. I have a couple of customers that come in to the store who are deaf.

I use to sign cause I use to bowl with a few deaf friends. But due to other bowlers saying things about them, they quit.

I had so much fun learning the language. Well the other day a customer came in and she can not hear. I felt bad all I can remember in the language is Hi and bye.

So I decided to look up the language to relearn so that way I can make her feel better when she comes into the store and better understand her if she has any questions on anything in the store.

I am also going to teach my co-workers in case she comes in when I am not there so that she can feel more comfortable in the store.

This free class I found is helping me to refresh my memory. And I want to thank you for it. So Thank You.
