Read this outline, and then watch the conversation in action on the video clip. Try to recognize what is being said. Watch the video again until you can follow the conversation without the outline.

A: WHAT-DO YOU SEE NEW CLOTHES STORE THEY PUT
“Did you see the new clothing store they put in?”

B: NO WHERE LOCATION WHERE?
“No, where is it?”

A: IT NICE. IT NEXT TO FOOD STORE.
“It’s nice. It’s next to the grocery store.”

B: NO I PREFER SHOP MACY’S
“No, I prefer to shop at Macy’s.”

A: BUT FAR NEXT TOWN
“But that’s way out in the next town.”

B: KNOW I SHOP MANY YEARS UP-TO-NOW FAVORITE STORE.
“I know, but I’ve been shopping there for years. It’s my very favorite store.”

Conveying Distance

You can convey distance with non-manual behaviors. These behaviors specify whether something is far away, moderately far away, or close.

To indicate something that is far away, you would:

  • Tilt your head (to the right if you are pointing left and vise versa)
  • Slightly open your mouth and squint your eyes
  • Show the route with your arm fully extended

To indicate something that is moderately far away, you would:

  • Tilt your head (to the right if you are pointing left and vise versa)
  • Purse your lips (“mm”)
  • Show the route with your arm partly extended

To indicate something that is close, you would:

  • Tilt your head (to the right if you are pointing left and vise versa)
  • Clench your teeth (“cs”)
  • Show the route while keeping your arm close to you

These behaviors should come pretty naturally. Watch the video below to see me demonstrate the different distances.

  1. Far away on left
  2. Moderately far on left
  3. Close on left
  4. Far away on right
  5. Moderately far on right
  6. Close on right

Conveying Distance Practice 7.1

Turn to page 8 in your workbook. I will be signing different locations at different distances away relative to the numbers in the picture. The answers will be from my perspective. For each description, write the number of the area on the line and what is at that location. The first one has been done for you.

When you’re finished, check your answers in the back of the workbook. Go back and review the questions you missed. Then, go back and sign each description for practice.

Comprehension 7.2

Turn to page 9 in your workbook. The video below was used for the Pluralization Practice in the last unit. In the video below, Christine will sign 10 sentences. For each number, put an “X” next to the most accurate translation of the sentence.

When you’re finished, check your answers in the back of the workbook. Go back and review the questions you missed.
